Within my circle of friends, I am known to be very “cheapskate” about conferences. I believed that information should be free and conferences are more talk than real substance. A friend of mine, Dave, changed my notion when he encouraged me to attend Value Investing Summit (VIS) in 2015.
This was how our conversation went…
Me: “You want to go meh? It is quite expensive leh… about S$199 each.”
Dave: “Eh bro, you need to spend time and money to learn from the investors themselves who have been investing for many years. That way, we are able to grow faster as individuals. You can also network with other investors and pick their brains as well.”
Me: “Let me ask whether there are any other friends who are interested as well….”
Dave: “Ok, let me know soon.”
Me: “Dave! Bryan decided to sign up for the event. Let’s go!”
While I still had my “cheapskate” belief, I signed up for Value Investing Summit by taking advantage of the bundled tickets 2 for S$399 package. If the event is any bad, at least, I got to spend 2 days to catch up with my former polytechnic friends.
Well, the event turned out differently from what I expected! It was a positive experience.
Today, I went back to search what I previously posted about VIS 2015. Look at what I’ve found!
I now believe that
- conference can be fun and engaging through prizes and games. I even won a book!
- my unhealthy belief systems are sabotaging my personal growth and financial freedom.
- I can learn faster by interacting with others and leveraging on the experts’ knowledge.
Examples of unhealthy statements are…. I will never be rich. They are smarter than me. Investing is for professionals only. Compounding my wealth at 20% is impossible.
After all, I’ve paid for the summit and so, I became motivated to dive deeper into value investing, learn how to perform my stock analysis and take actions. I did that by understanding more about 8I Education (S)’s founders and the purpose of them conducting their seminar programs including VIS. In June 2015, I decided to join the company as a full-time employee.
VIS 2016 got even better with the attendance numbers swelling over 1,500 attendees. The stock analysis went international as well! There was stock analysis of companies from Australia and Japan.
Dr Niwes Hemvachiravarakorn (video) was invited back. Also, founder of Capital Dynamics Group from Malaysia, Tan Teng Boo (video), made his first appearance at our VIS. Channel NewsAsia even came to catch a glimpse of them!

To me, it was so different seeing their photos online and seeing them in real person! I admit I was a bit nervous speaking to them when we were doing our event rehearsals. Some attendees were able to interact with the speakers during our breaks and meals time.
Here is a video that summarised the entire event here. Most importantly, it is also a result-based event. Every year, the results of previous VIS were shared and compared against regional indices.
Under the scenario of an equal allocation, here is our VIS16 results measured in SGD currency so far:
Assume that I had invested S$10,000, my returns would be $1,523. Compared with the current early bird selling price of S$229, my return made my ticket price so worth it!
