He started his investing journey while still in university and like any other novice, this unassuming young man made his own share of blunders, including losing money back then.
Today, he stands on stage to empower people of all ages with the knowledge of value investing.
He’s none other than our speaker and trainer, Chern Hong.
“My first exposure to investing was during one of my classes in my second year of university. Then I took part in a trading challenge, but I did not win as my results were not good.
Thanks to this, I became more tak boleh tahan (cannot “tahan”), and went on to read more books on trading. I learned about Japanese Candlesticks, Head and Shoulder, Moving Average, Cross Signal, and so on.
“My dream back then was to become a cool professional trader who spends his time trading in front of three monitor screens while gaining his friends’ admiration.
“So during my semester holidays, I stayed home and created a routine for myself. Without fail, I woke up at 7.30am each day to wash up and have breakfast. By 8.45am, I would be stationed in front of my computer to start trading.
“Within the first month, I lost RM3,000 of angbao money, which I had been saving since I was seven years old. I spent the next two months blaming everyone and everything around me for my bad results.
“After the holidays, I got to know Alex (also an 8I team member) who shared about a new investing method he had found called Value Investing.
“As fate would have it, we came across an advertisement for Pauline’s talk when we were having breakfast in Bangsar a few days later. We attended the session with a few friends. I had never been more captivated by the idea of investing.
“Broke from my trading activities, I called my father on the spot and asked for his financial support to attend MIP; and promised to repay him the MIP course fee. My sole intention at that point was to learn about value investing.
“We attended MIP just a few days before our university final exams… the rest, as they say, is history.
“Now, I enjoy a return of 350% from my investments – I’ve recovered the money I lost in trading and returned MIP program fee to my father. In fact, I am currently managing my father’s money in the stock market.
“Every night before I sleep, I spend 30 mins reading. On top of that, I meet up with my Mastermind group every other week to discuss some of the companies we’ve discovered. All in all, I spend around 13 to 14 hours per month researching and analyzing companies.

“I hope fellow MIP grads will continue to learn and practice what they learn during MIP, and come back often for tutorials to keep current, and to sharpen their investing skills. Value Investing has been proven to be one of the best methods to achieve financial freedom. When you know where to put your money, you can take a lion-size bite during a crisis. Always practice independent thinking!! Happy Investing!”
